by Gary Bernard
The clouds
Puffed liked a cornered cat
Gray and menacing
Casting a darkness
Over the singleness of my will
With my bare feet
stretched out over the edge of a rock
waiting
as the waves beside them danced
And the long deepening blue Pacific
Rippled and crashed before my eyes
I only knew distance in miles
Not in the goodbye she presented me with
I could not bear this time
This distance
This time apart
